Dear Friends,

Earlier this week, I sat in a room with a handful of people from several Upstate Presbyterian churches as we listened to a man talk about how the church has changed. He wondered how people in our congregations view that change. The answers sounded familiar.

Everything would be fine if we just had more members.

We need more young people.

People just need to get their priorities straight and come back to church.

But as the speaker reminded us, church no longer stands at the center of community activity. The days in which people gathered at church for all of their social events as well as for worship and religious education are long gone.

We can see that right here at Providence, can’t we? How many folk find themselves juggling the conflicting demands of church and world – from travel sports teams or performance competitions to distant family or aging parents?

The church can’t compete – shouldn’t try to compete – on the basis of activities or programs or entertainment. Instead, the church needs to focus on three key areas:

1. Shifting from identifying people as members to disciples. Members go to church; disciples are the church.

2. Focus on church as missional rather than attractional. The number of church seekers has shrunk – rather than receiving people who come to us, we are called to go to the community that needs us.

3. Move from a consumer orientation (What can the church do for me?) to a sacred partnering in which we recognize the need for church in our call to daily discipleship.

We start by examining our own relationship to church. Are we passing through on Sunday morning, then turning to a worldly existence for the rest of the week? Or are we stepping into true discipleship, recognizing God’s claim on our lives 24/7? Are we members, or are we disciples?

As Providence steps into the future, these are the questions we need to be asking of ourselves. What does it mean to be church in the 21st century?

In faith and hope,

Terri
