Stephen Ministry - We commissioned four new Stephen Ministers on October 12, 2003. We now have a total of 13 trained Stephen Ministers who will minister to the congregation and surrounding area. What is Stephen Ministry? Stephen Ministry is a one-on-one care giving ministry. Lay caregivers (called Stephen Ministers) provide one-to-one Christian care to the bereaved, hospitalized, terminally ill, separated, divorced, unemployed, relocated, and other facing a crisis or life challenge. Stephen Ministry helps pastors enhance caring ministry by ensuring that quality follow-up care is available for as long as it is needed. Stephen Ministry is a lay, caring ministry in which one person reaches out to another during a time of need or crises. Stephen Ministers offer encouragement and friendship. It is an ongoing helping relationship in which people who need help get help. Who can be a Stephen Minister? A Stephen Minister is trained to be an encourager, a listener, a “special friend.” To someone who may be experiencing any number of life’s trials or crises. A Stephen Minister should b e someone who cares about others, who has a heart for people and is compassionate and empathic. If you feel this is a ministry you would like to be part of, please contact Becky Kay or Donna Robertson. Training will be help in the spring of this year. What Kind of Training Does Stephen Ministry Involve? To prepare for this ministry, laypeople will receive fifty hours of training on various topics. This training takes place over several months and includes with a commissioning service. Topics include listening, feelings, making the first contact, confidentiality, as well as specific situations such as hospitalization, grief, death and dying, illness, depression, ministering to the elderly or shut-in, divorce, suicide and childbirth crisis. What Stephen Ministry is not. Stephen Ministers are not professional counselors, nor a replacement for pastoral care. How Do I Receive the Care of a Stephen Minister? Please contact Mike Fitze or Becky Kay if you are interested in having a Stephen Minister. They in turn will contact a trained Stephen Minister to get in touch with you.
